The other day, I was walking with my friend Sergio down the street. A Black man who was sitting on a bench saw us and said “You guys look good together.” I wasn’t sure how to respond. First of all, Sergio is in the friend category. Secondly, and most importantly, Sergio is gay and I am straight, so we bat for different teams. Thirdly, this ran counter to my notions of Black men being hostile to interracial couples involving a Black woman.

I don’t know, maybe he was looking for a handout.
